Thank you for this article. I found it really quite exciting to read that the original intention in Genesis was to describe man as becoming a living, breathing person, rather than acquiring a separate entity, the soul; that the Hebrew concept of the word translated as soul is 'what one is to oneself' as opposed to what one appears to one's observers. That makes so much sense as a constant biblical theme and also as a theme I, as a person with a continual inner perspective, can relate to. Amongst other things, it's an enormous comfort to realise the Bible understands what's going on inside me!
I wonder too, if what Jesus is saying in John 5 21-30, along with the fact that the soul doesn't necessarily go on forever, is that he has absolute authority, equal to that of his Father and that only by responding to his voice and teaching, will it be possible to have the inner life in ourselves go on forever - only our positive response to Jesus will remain.

I'm looking forward to the future articles to find out more.

I printed off a few copies of 'What did Jesus say about the soul?' for a group of Christian friends who meet at my home each week, and we used this article as the starting point for a very interesting and refreshing discussion on our 'wholeness' in Christ and out integrity as whole people - not three separate people in one (mind, soul, body) but one person, brought to life by God to worship and serve him with our whole selves. It has made me think very carefully about the need to care for my mind and body as well as my spiritual wellbeing - I need to take time each day to care for my physical and emotional needs, in a similar way to that in which I aim to spend time reading the Bible and praying. I have responsibility for the whole of the person God has made me to be.
The whole group is very keen to see the next study in the series! Please put it on the site soon!
